The Chesterfield Hotel in Palm Beach, a member of Red Carnation Hotels, is sedate, proper and very British. Plush, overstuffed, floral furnishings provide the design motif in each of its 55 guestrooms and suites, and high tea is served in the parlor. "No request too large, no detail too small" is the hotel's motto. Small dogs are welcomed, pampered and treated to special amenities and services.

In New York, the SoHo Grand and the TriBeCa Grand, both known for their funky style, downtown-with-attitude guests and star-power, are owned by Hartz Mountain Industries, the purveyors of pet products. They pamper dogs by providing special chew toys, treats, turndown services, dog-walking and elegant sleeping accommodations.

The Metropolitan in Midtown Manhattan has a frequent pet program offering rewards depending on the number of stays. An elegant carry-bag from Emre Leathers or a session with a pet psychic are just two examples. As in most hotels with special programs, pets at The Metropolitan are welcomed with an amenity bag and a note from the general manager. Their owners are given a list of nearby establishments for other pet services such as vets and shops specializing in pet products.

The Muse, a 200-room Times Square boutique hotel, offers the Pooch Package, replete with dog-sized amenities, complimentary dog walking and one free room-service meal per stay.

The Jefferson, in Washington, D.C., has long been known for its appeal to a very select clientele. Had Dick Morris, former consigliere to President Clinton, been discovered sucking the toes of a Doberman pinscher instead of a high-class call girl in that most proper of establishment accommodations, his career might not have gone down in flames. Now a member of Loews Hotels, The Jefferson offers special amenities to pets of all types and species, a Loews' signature service.

In fact, two hotel groups stand out when it comes to offering services to the guest with a pet: The Kimpton Group and Loews.
