By Carol and Ray Fischer, our "Romantic Getaways" correspondents. They love to travel, together, to warm places, exciting cities, and any place with a casino. As long as they are together, it doesn't matter where they go. They can always find romance.
Steeped in history, its resplendent beaches blanketing the coast, St.
Augustine, Florida is a city whose diverse attractions have enticed
visitors for well over four hundred years.
Sunny days invite a
leisurely exploration of its narrow cobblestone streets (wear walking
shoes) weaving past charming boutiques and colorful art galleries.
Dining options are many, varied and yummy. And an occasional ghost
story peppering the day brings its magic to life.
We began our stay checking in at the lovely Bayfront Westcott House,
a Bed and Breakfast across the street from the tranquil Intracoastal
Waterway. Within a short walk of many shops, museums and
restaurants, this beautifully renovated property features guest rooms
with queen or king size beds, private baths (some with large Jacuzzis)
and elegant antique furnishings. Our romantic in room welcome included a
bottle of chilled champagne and a tray of heavenly chocolate dipped
strawberries, one of several options which can be arranged at an additional cost for that special occasion.
Although the huge Jacuzzi in the corner looked inviting we opted for
a quick fresh-up in the large double shower with back to back dual heads.
Very nice.
Ready for the evening, we strolled hand in hand along the bay a few
blocks to another beautiful Bed and Breakfast, the Casablanca Inn.
There we had the pleasure of celebrating the grand opening of Casablanca's new Tini Martini Bar. Drinks in hand, we mellowed in the bar's intimate atmosphere as dusk fell on the city.
Before heading to dinner, we boarded the Red Sightseeing Train for a
quick overview of the city's sights. The train's driver/tour guide provided
a lively narration which we enjoyed in spite of our back row giggles
left over from the (not very) Tini Martinis. Riding through the entire
tour of the city is a great way to size up all the fun activities available
before narrowing down the specific places to visit during one's stay.
