The Algonquin Literary and theatre history infuse this venerable hotel with character, while a recent change in management and a complete renovation has brought luxury into the charming fin de siècle hotel. You might see the ghosts of Douglas Fairbanks or Dorothy Parker strolling the halls, and it's a sure bet you'll run into Matilda, the cat who runs the hotel with iron paws. Ameritania A recent renovation has updated this hotel just steps from Late Night with David Letterman. The location is great, on Broadway and W. 54th, not far from the theatre district, Fifth Avenue shopping and Rockefeller Center. Rooms have been upgraded to include down comforters, CD players, two phone lines, Internet access and on-demand movies. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? Please review it for us.

The Blakely We loved this little hotel -formerly The Gorham- around the corner from Carnegie Hall (and the Letterman show,) with its Italian-enameled furniture, blindingly bright bedspreads and drapes, marble bathrooms and kitchenettes. Now it's a trendy boutique hotel owned and managed by the team from The Mercer and Chambers. See our Photos - From the Gorham days. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? The Bryant Park One of Manhattan's newest offerings (February, 2001) in the oh-so-chic-ly redone American Radiator Building, this is probably the hippest hotel in midtown. At least for the moment. And with good reason: It's across from its namesake, Bryant Park, home of the twice-annual Fashion Week; it has pioneered high-tech check-in and butler services, it has an award-winning bar and restaurant, elegant guestrooms, and a screening room booked by celebs and producers who want an intimate but trendy locale to throw their parties. Stars, mini-stars, models and model wannabes stay here, or at least visit The Cellar bar. Just a few steps west of Fifth Avenue and the New York City Library, it commands an excellent location. Chambers Billed as the "uptown hotel with the downtown attitude," this chic Fifth Avenue boutique hotel stresses the art scene of SoHo, TriBeCa and the Village. Each of the 77 rooms and suites is an emerging artists' gallery; original piantings and prints are featured throughout the hotel. Walnut floors, platform beds, Turkish rugs and cashmere throws are just some of the decor aspects, while the bathrooms include deep soaking tubs and rain showerheads. Some of the suites have terraces. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? Please review it for us.

The Edison The original Art Deco lobby remains intact after the recent facelift of this venerable New York tourist-class hotel. Happily the rates remain quite good, and the location is fantastic for theatre-goers. It's a huge hotel, one of the largest in Manhattan, with a readily-recognized building dating back to the 1920s. Helmsley Windsor This hotel has some of the largest rooms we have seen in New York. We loved staying here; the location is just wonderful for 5th Avenue or 57th Street shopping, for wandering up to Central Park, for walking to either the theatre district or Rockefeller Center. There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel (although it's surrounded by many) which keeps the rates down for competitive reasons. It's charming and elegant and perfectly located. The Muse This boutique hotel in Times Square has pleasant rooms in trendy decor. It's quiet, which is nice, but we find the staff a bit too stiff and pretentious. On the other hand, it's pet friendly, in a great location, and reasonably priced for its class. Each room has an ISDN line, there's a second floor fitness center, and its restaurant, District, has garnered great reviews. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? Please review it for us.

Paramount - Hard Rock Hotel Ian Schraeger and Philippe Starck's whimsical collaboration makes the 610 teeny rooms in this hotel liveable and fun. The lobby alone offers enough interest to keep you amazed for days, with its off-kilter stairway and roses growing out of the marble walls. A cool restaurant and nightclub round out the scene, but who would have guessed that this über-chic hostellery would also embrace kids? Welcome gifts, treats, games and videos are all available for the young 'uns. We like that. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? Please review it for us.

The Shoreham This newly refurbished boutique hotel in the heart of Midtown is hip and trendy, but still cosy and comfortable. After a strenuous day of shopping on Fifth Avenue, take advantage of the all-day cappuccino and espresso bar, the VCR in your room and your own Essential Oil aromatherapy bath products. After turndown service you can snuggle into your bed with the down comforter and the Belgian linens, and wake to a complimentary Continental breakfast. Location Map Have you stayed in this hotel? Time Trendy, hip and chic. Ok, there are lots of those in NYC, so what sets this one apart? URBAN hip, chic styling, with minimalist furnishings in bright colors. The rooms are smallish, the building dates from the 1920s but the contemporary and vibrant design, upscale amenities and 18-hour room service makes a real difference.
