WESTIN RIOMAR RESORT AND VILLAS, PUERTO RICO
Nothing indicates elegance as much as the bathroom in a hotel, villa, resort or inn accommodation. In this regard, Westin has just about hit the five-star mark.
Talk about classy! They even put little Westin stickers on the toilet paper, which is carefully folded into points. I hesitated to use it because it was so elegantly presented.
A long granite double vanity with excellent lighting is atop a large light-pine cabinet with several drawers for stashing your stuff. The mirrors are framed and elegant, the amenities are top-notch. A basket of "whatever you need" sits on the counter and includes a loofah, a twist-cap shoe shine sponge, a fancy sewing kit, a lint remover, mouth wash, Neutrogena soaps, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, cotton balls, an emory board, and the ubiquitous shower cap.
There are plenty of thick towels, a lighted makeup mirror and a hairdryer.
I WISH THE NICE BATHROOM SCALE WEREN'T STARING AT ME EVERY TIME I ENTERED THE ROOM
One thing that I find odd, however, is that while the bathroom exudes luxury from every corner, the bathtub is absolutely PUNY. In a newly built resort such as this, it's surprising that steeping tubs or larger tubs of some sort weren't selected. The bathtubs in the units are very shallow, barely more than basins to hold the shower water. And while I appreciate that there are those who WANT it, I wish the nice bathroom scale weren't staring at me every time I entered the room.
The balconies of the villas, while not opulent, are pleasant and nicely furnished. Because all of the balconies are oceanfront, all units have sea views. Whether they are sweeping vistas or enhanced with the verdant landscaping is largely a matter of how high up the villa might be. The beach is groomed and swept at least once daily. There are paths that meander to the sea, the golf course, the main resort. There are palapas, chaises, beach towels. The villas property has two pools which face the ocean; one is the quiet pool reserved for adults who want to relax, the other is an "activity pool" where kids can splash and play and shout, and which has the only whirlpool at the villas. Between the pools is a bar which also serves light fare throughout the day.
