The Black Rose The food is secondary, and actually, so is the Guinness in this lively pub in the tourist mecca of Fanueil Hall Marketplace. What you come for is the music, the foot-stompin', hand-clappin' Irish tunes. We were tourists when we went, and we had an unabashedly great time. The Bull and Finch Pub (Cheers) The original inspiration for the television show, Cheers, is located on Beacon Street next to Boston Common. Capitalizing on the popular franchise, the owners opened a new one in the touristy Faneuil Hall Marketplace. The menus include catchy titles like eNORMous Burgers, Frasier's Favorites, and Diane's Desserts. The original Bull and Finch used to be a nice pub in this tony neighborhood, but unless you are an absolute Cheers-the-TV-show zealot, stay away. The Burren Another popular Irish pub with good food, good Guinness and good music, this one is located in Somerville, easily accessible by public transportation. It's family fun time on Sunday afternoons, too. The Comedy Connection Reserved seating and national name-brand comedians distinguish this yuk-fest from its counterparts in other cities. The Web page lists its calendar, and its open mike nights for all you budding Rosie O'Donnells or Jay Lenos. Daisy Buchanan's The name is the only thing resembling F.Scott Fitzgerald's heroine in this "underground" bar on trendy Newbury St. It's fun and gets very rowdy on weekend nights, where pro athletes rub shoulders with college kids and... the occasional tourist out for a good time. Mystery Café Dinner Theatre Who can resist a "comedic murder mystery in four acts," during which you are served a four-course meal "by the suspects themselves?" I can't. The Boston Globe called it "Delicious fun." At the end of the evening you get to guess whodunit. Summer mystery cruises are offered, too... and the venue is perfect for corporate meetings and events.
